DPAGES – a design publication for lovers of all things cool & beautiful

THIS…

1843 whaling captain’s home on Lengthy Island’s South Fork is an architectural treasure of grand proportions. It has not just one but two pediment-topped porches, every adorned with ranks of 20-foot-tall columns in typical Greek Revival type.

WHEN…

new householders named on Sag Harbor-based mostly Maureen McDermott of Winter McDermott Style to imbue the historic home with up to date spirit for their youthful spouse and children, she approached the undertaking with her signature blend of present day minimalism and organic and natural design details. There is a preponderance of sparkling white in wall colors and furnishings, with unfinished wood, handmade lights fixtures and pottery vessels lending comforting heat. An architectural refresh by Forden & Co. Builders, also of Sag Harbor, preserved much of the present authentic detail, which include broad plank pine flooring, period panel doorways, wooden mantels and turned stair balusters. Recently added modern characteristics, these as the black glass-and-metal doors main to a butler’s pantry, are a sensitive interaction of aged and new.

THE SUN…

filled living area overlooking the harbor is a showcase for the designer’s use of texture and all-natural elements, with a nubby carpet and woven MG501 Paper Twine Cuba Chairs by Morten Gøttler for Danish furniture manufacturer Carl Hansen & Søn.

THE DINING…

space is all clarity and simplicity, with a custom made walnut desk, caned chairs and prolonged twill drapes framing the harbor watch.

AN INFORMAL…

eating place adjacent to the kitchen area showcases the building’s antique structure, with uncovered unique brick and beams. A Serge Mouille lights fixture and Hans J. Wegner’s traditional CH24 Wishbone Chairs for Carl Hansen & Søn encapsulate the designer’s embrace of vintage modern-day style and design.

SHAKER…

type millwork and normal stone countertops in the luxuriously up-to-date kitchen area meld seamlessly with the just about all-white décor elsewhere in the residence. Listed here as elsewhere, McDermott prevented the fashionable-day trope of recessed lighting, picking out as a substitute pendant fixtures and sconces all through the home.

A CUSTOM…

fabric headboard, classic caned bench and a desk chair by 20th century Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret are between the furnishings in the peaceful main bedroom.  A woven paper pendant light by Naomi Paul illuminates the area.

THE SUMPTUOUS…

main bathtub incorporates current pine floors and an unique fire. Its layout is distinguished by the use of highly figured black-and white marble, set off with gleaming brass components aspects.

THE SWEEPING…

update has presented the monumental home a good uplift, bringing a 19th century dwelling to 21st century life.
